Use Targeting Optimization
AI uses synced lists to flag missed buyer exclusions, retargeting, and lookalikes weekly in Meta Ads, Google Ads, and Yahoo! Ads (Display). Apply rows in bulk.
Author: Cascade
With Targeting Optimization, AI checks your synced customer lists once a week for Missing purchaser exclusion, Retargeting not in use, and Lookalike audience not in use, then sends you proposals. Choose whether to apply each row, then apply your selections in bulk. Open Ad Optimization in the left menu and click View proposal on the Targeting Optimization card.
Find campaigns that are not making full use of your customer lists without reviewing audience settings separately on each ad platform.
Supported ad platforms
Meta Ads
Google Ads
Yahoo! Ads (Display)
Amazon Ads (adding category product targets only)
Lookalike audience creation is supported for Meta Ads and Google Ads Demand Gen campaigns.
Prerequisites
Available on the Business plan.
Connect the relevant ad platform under Settings > Integrations.
Create a customer list under Ad Settings > Audience Management and sync it to the relevant ad platform.
Owners, Admins, and Editors can review proposals. Owners and Admins can apply them and toggle Auto-apply.

If no synced customer lists exist, the card shows Setup required. Click Settings to open Targeting Optimization Settings and see the required steps.
Under Create customer list, select a list type, such as Customers who purchased or Prospects who haven't purchased, and create the list.
Select the ad platforms to sync to when creating the list. For an existing list, select them from Add sync destination in the row menu.
Click Open in Audience Management to go to Audience Management. Once the sync completes, proposals arrive from the next analysis.
Steps
1. Open Ad Optimization
Select Ad Optimization in the left menu. The Targeting Optimization card shows Learning until proposals are available.
2. Review the proposal list

Click View proposal on the Targeting Optimization card to open the proposal list.
Column | Description |
|---|---|
Campaign | The name of the target campaign. |
Ad group | The name of the target ad group. |
Apply Result | The result of applying the proposal. |
Type | Missing purchaser exclusion, Retargeting not in use, Lookalike audience not in use, or Add category product target (Brand Metrics) |
Media | The target ad platform. |
Customer list to apply | The name of the customer list to apply (approximately N people). The target country is also shown for lookalike audiences. |
Category to apply | The product category to add in a Brand Metrics proposal and the number of shoppers in the consideration stage. |
Action | Select Apply or Don't suggest again. |
If none apply, the message "There are no applicable proposals." appears.
Missing purchaser exclusion proposals apply to the entire campaign (all its ad groups). You cannot limit the purchaser exclusion to a specific ad group.
3. Apply proposals
Select Apply or Don't suggest again for each row, then click Optimize Targeting to apply your selections in bulk. If applying some rows fails, processing continues for the others. Check failed rows in the Apply Result column.
Proposal types
Missing purchaser exclusion
This proposal identifies campaigns that continue to show acquisition ads to customers who have already purchased a product and suggests adding the purchaser list as an excluded audience.
Retargeting not in use
This proposal identifies ad groups that have never used a synced customer list for ad delivery and suggests using it for retargeting ads.
Lookalike audience not in use
Based on your synced customer lists, this proposal identifies campaigns that have not yet created lookalike audiences and suggests expanding to new prospects. It supports Meta Ads and Google Ads Demand Gen campaigns. Lookalike segments created in Google Ads can only be used in Demand Gen campaigns. Google is also gradually moving lookalike segments to suggestion mode, so ads may be delivered beyond your selected range (you can opt out in Google Ads settings).
Add category product target (Brand Metrics)
These proposals are available when Amazon Ads is connected and you have an EC Analysis plan. When the number of shoppers in the consideration stage in Amazon Brand Metrics is below the category median, the proposal suggests adding a product target for that category.
Reviewing and applying proposals does not consume AI credits. Proposals are not applied automatically; only approved proposals are applied (except for the automated Recommended Audiences described next).
Recommended Audiences proposals
Immediately after you sync a customer list to an ad platform or connect a new ad platform, you receive a Recommended Audiences proposal that combines "create a segment > sync to the ad platform > exclude purchasers > create a lookalike audience." A single approval runs the entire setup.
Enable Automated recommended audiences in Audience Management or select Auto-apply on the card to configure future proposals automatically without approval and receive notifications of the results. Automatic setup does not run if your data usage policy limits the information sent to click IDs. To stop it, turn the setting off in the same place.
If Slack, Chatwork, or Microsoft Teams is connected, you receive a targeting improvement notification when a proposal arrives.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
The card shows Setup required. | A customer list has not been created and synced. | Follow the guidance under Settings to create and sync a customer list in Audience Management. |
The message "There are no applicable proposals." appears. | Learning is still in progress and no proposals are available, or no campaigns have room for improvement. | Wait for the weekly check. |
The Apply Result column shows a failure for some rows. | The target ad platform is disconnected, or a temporary communication error occurred. | Check the failed rows, then click Optimize Targeting again. If the issue persists, check the connection status under Integrations. |
You cannot toggle Auto-apply on the card. | Your role is not Owner or Admin. | Ask an Owner or Admin. |
